Swiss School

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xErMPMzSVy8

THIS VIDEO taught me all about SUMAS
The Sustainability and Management School in Switzerland is the first of its kind in Europe
It is located in Gland, between Geneva and bla.
The students are happy about Switzerland's location in the middle of Europe, and Switzerland's beauty.
It is the only school that handles a masters in Buisness Administration with Sustainability.
Sustainability is the future.

This vid is about consumption and Global Warming
The key player in global warming is industry.
There is a webpage that calculates how big your ecological footprint is.
If we continue on this rate, by 2050 we will need twice the world's surface to satisfy our waste and needs.
Now a days there are many ecological solutions but people just dont use them because theyre expensive.
In Europe there are logos that tell the consumer exactly what theyre buying.

This link was about Al Gore's movie, An Inconvenient Truth.
The hottest ten years recorded were in the last 14 years. The hottest was 2005
If we continue, Shanghai, Florida, Calcutta and New York will be 20ft underwater. \
Glaciers and Snow Peaked Mountains are melting everywhere. Soon, Mt Kilimanjaro wont have snow.
Al Gore was going to be the next president of the United Nations.

This video shows a speech made by the solar impulse pilots.
They say that you need innovation and creativity to stand out in life
We are in the best moment in human kind because we are capable of designing something that can save mankind.
The meeting was held in a basketball stadium.
I know Ms Shawn won't read this, however, I am still doing it.
The graduating class was of Arizona State University.
We need to be pioneers and explorers.

http://www.solarimpulse.com/timeline/view/6971#.UZoamDj47zY.gmail

There was a creation of a solar plane that is extremely slow but requires no fuel at all. It can practically fly on forever, however, the pilots get extremely tired and they require sleep and to stretch their legs. That is why I would be willing to take a PS3 with me on the trip, to be able to play FIFA whenever I want.

LETTER TO SUMAS

Dear Ms. Cadenas,
In Bogota, there are many environmental problems that need to be solved. For example, the sewage system isn't the best, not every place has recycling bins and there is no strict law against littering like there is in Southeast Asia. However, the most horrifying thing about Bogota's sustainability is the fact that we have an atrocious Garbage Disposal System.
The thing is, Ms. Cadenas, that we don't have a very good mayor. Of course it is not entirely his fault, but he still could do a lot more to solve Bogota's crisis. It is practically impossible to walk in and Bogota street and not find a piece of litter around. That is why changing the current Garbage Disposal System in Bogota would be my top priority in the city's current state.
Sincerely,
Alejandro Samper

Growing Up Online

I Wasn't impressed

Teenagers use the Internet excessively.
They spend lots of time online.
They are vulnerable to other dangerous people.
People don't know what to do with their lives without the Internet
They can't spend a break without Internet.
People lack the ability to focus.
People lack time to read books.
People accept many people that they don't know on MySpace
Teenagers try on new personalities to find themselves.
Bullying happens a lot.
A mistake on the net is open to anyone.
There are stories of sexual predators online
People that are themselves in the internet.
Parents have no idea about the internet life of their children.
The children are scared to confess their problems to their parents.

I was impressed.

Schools that eliminated chalkboards for data projectors.
Some teachers publish podcasts.
Turnitin.com that fights plagiarism.
Some teachers are looking to the meaning of cheating over again.
Real life fights that are started from MySpace.
People that are such cowards that they insult people through the Internet.
Some girls are too easy to convince to sent naked pictures.
Parents tried to intervene in students lives.
People get popular through the people.
The principals considered the pictures in Jessica's to be pornographic.
The effects the internet has in people's lives, especially when there are mistake done.
A mom that is paranoid that TEENAGE BOYS will be wanting to rape their "attractive" daughters.
A paranoid mom that asks her sons and daughers for their passwords
More "risky" situations were offline than online\
the children that go look for danger. the arrange the meeting with the predator.
Forums for anorexic people that WANT to be anorexic.

What has changed

People using MySpace.
People using flip phones
People start to sext.
iCloud was installed so there is a virtual drive.
Security services are stronger.
Internet popularity has increased greatly.
There are portable internet smartphones in which people can access the internet and their mails everywhere, anytime.
Internet and anonymous people can cause an amplification in the suicidal minds of teenagers.
Children are raised with the basic traits of cyber citizenship
Parents support their children regardless.
there are more ways to remain anonymous
More ways to cheat, and to prevent cheating

AFTER THE MOVIE

I identified myself with the internet dependence because I use the internet every day and for a long time. The internet is addictive. You have lots to do and you can do things simultaneously. Also, with the new smartphones and wifi, you can access internet anywhere from any console.  The internet can be your haven, your hub. It shows your real identity, especially in your teenage years.

I didnt identify myself at all with the paranoid parents that require my password. My parents, however, put an internet control thingy that doesnt let me enter dangerous sites.

GAFE

Google Search

It is the world's most used internet tool. People Google search things whenever they feel it is necessary because they know that Google will find an answer. In the top 50 most popular websites, Google.com is the second most visited, google.co.in is 12, google.com.hk is 24, google.de is 25, google.co.uk is 27,  google.co.jp is 31, Google.fr is 34, google.br is 38, google.ru is 42, google.it is 49 and google.es is 50.
http://mostpopularwebsites.net/

Google search works with labels and most visited websites. If you search Futbol Club Barcelona, for example, you will be directed to a page which shows the most visited websites with the labels "Futbol", "Club" and "Barcelona". Since it is a popular subject, the club's official page will appear in the top, alongside some photos from Google images in the left.

Google search has a few shortcuts that may be helpful when you are researching information. For example, there is a translation button in which you can translate full pages into your native language. Also you can preview the link before actually entering it, which is also cool.

Google search can be used as anything and everything. Google offers hidden services that can save you a lot of time if you know how to use them correctly. Here are a few examples of these tips and tricks.

1. Finding the time at any place in the world. Just search Time in *insert place here*.
2. Searching for synonyms. For example, if you put YouTube video ~tutorial (with the ~ in front of tutorial) Google will also search for YouTube video guide, manual, reference. etc.
3. Find the definition of any word. You put define *word* and the first thing that appears will be the definition.Ms. Shawn, if you are reading this far, leave a comment on this post.
4. In Google Chrome the link bar may be used as a search bar. This helps when you are too lazy to enter Google.com to find what you're looking for.
5. You can do mathematical problems in Google search. You can even graph things such as y=10x-5
6. Convert units. Search 10 kg in pounds, etc.
7. You can search images by dragging them into the search box.

This is already widely used by the educational society and will be used throughout Google's age of glory.

Google Day 2.3

Harvard University is one of the best in the most explored fields of education. Today I will research

Best Medical Schools and Harvard's Ranking

Best Law Schools and Harvard's Ranking
Best Economic Schools and Harvard's Ranking

MEDICINE:
Top Universities

According to this page, Harvard is at the top with a stunning 97.9% effectivity. This ranking is based upon Academic reputation, Employer reputation and Citations per paper. The next university, Oxford, holds a 94% effectivity rate.

LAW
Top Universities

Again, Harvard is first with the same 97.9%  effectivity. The same filters apply. However, Yale University is at second place with 93.7%.

Also, US News says that Harvard is second while Yale is first. Maybe they don't use the same filters.

ECONOMY
Top Universities

This time Harvard was outhroned by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and holds the second place, with the same criteria, with a 92.4% effectivity. MIT stands at first with 96.6% effectivity.

After all this research we can see that Harvard is hands down the best university in the world, based on its sports (even though Stanford is better) and academic achievements.

Google 2.2

3 Goals For Today

1. Find out more about Harvard
2. Research its sports programs.
3. Recognized alumni.

Harvard

Harvard was founded in 1848 by John Harvard. It was the first school of high education in the United States and remains as the best university. It started out with a class of nine students with one master degree to more than 20000 students that can choose from 12 degree-granting schools. Harvard has 360 thousand living alumni across more than 190 countries.

The school's color is crimson  This is because in 1853, the rowing team in Harvard gave crimson scarves to the rowers so that the students could identify their school. After one of these rowers (Eliot) became president in 1869, the color was made the school's official color.

The school shield is a crimson shield with the Latin VERITAS in three books. Veritas means truth. It was sketched in an Overseers meeting in 1644 and found in the College Archives by Josiah Quincy for the College's bicentennial. It still remains today.

Sports

Harvard Crimson is the official name of the sports program. They play in NCAA I and have lots of different and talented players in their fields. In the London 2012 Olympics, Harvard students won 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal. That is quite impressive and just shows the great capacity of the Harvard Crimson athletic program.

Harvard Crimson YouTube Account

Recognized Alumni

Many important lawyers, presidents, activists, doctors, fashion designers and architects have studied at harvard.

Google Day 2.1

My goals for today are
1. Find out the top ten colleges and universities in the world and why.
2. The top ten chosen careers and why.
3. Highest SAT scores in 2012.

US News

Top 10 in 2010
Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Columbia
Chicago
MIT
Stanford
Duke
U Penn
Cal Tech

The rankings are based on the tuition fees, acceptance rate, freshmen retention rate and 6 year graduation rate. The top ten universities charge around 40K dollars approximately. Non of the top ten are extremely cheap.

ALEC

The top ten careers that will grow in size in 2012 are:
Network Systems Analysts:
Medical Assistants
Medical Records and Health Information Technicians
Software Engineers
Fitness Trainers
Physical Therapist Aides
Veterinary Technicians
Dental Hygienists

LA Times

The top ten schools with highest SAT scores are

Gretchen Whitney High (2000)
Pacific Collegiate Charter (1961)
Mission San Jose High (1958)
Palo Alto High (1951)
Lynbrook High (1949)
Henry M. Gunn High (1943)
Monta Vista High (1931)
Saratoga High (1923)
Troy High (1917)
Oxford Academy (1913)

What I learned

I learned that a great education in the United States is not cheap, in fact, many people cannot afford to pay around 40 grand a year for their children's education. However, the success rate of these universities is so high that I think that the 20 thousand students that enter these universities a year will end up in the high levels of the economic ladder.
Also, the fact that it is so expensive makes your choice of career vital, since you dont have that much margin of error. However, in the present day many universities are having programs for people to choose their preffered career instead of regretting their decisions.

Linux

I know nothing about Linux before I research about it.

QUESTIONS

What is Linux?
Why is it important?

LINKS

How Stuff Works
Linux

WHAT I LEARNED

Linux is an operating system that has grown in popularity in the last few years.
It is a competition to Windows and Mac OS.
The creator of the Linux kernel is Linus Torvalds.
Linux is free, and that is one of the main reasons it has increased in popularity.
Computer engineers and fans use Linux to have more control over their operating systems.

CONNECTION

This operating system connects to my life because it is an alternative to the mainstream Windows or Mac OS operating systems. However, I don't think that I will install it in my computer because it is still in the process of being created.

REMAINING QUESTIONS

Will it someday surpass the other two operating systems in popularity?

Design Day 5

1. We went to the EVL, but there are no "residents" there so we could only ask the employees. Most of them didn't play the game, but the ones that did liked the idea, but thought that the game was too fragile, and worried the catapult was going to break.

2. We couldn't get a picture because the catapult was broke and the ball stolen, so they threw it away last week.

3. Our goals were to make it just the right difficulty, and adjustable so it would be fun. We met the second goal, but the game was too hard.

4.The biggest problem we encountered was either balancing and supporting the board, or making the catapult so it was resilient and usable (make sure the lever worked swiftly enough to launch the ball) at the same time.

5. When we found  a way to make the catapult stay in place, and make it shoot long enough. However, this design did not work too well on a larger scale.

6. Sammy resisted most ideas because he was all for keeping it simple, while Alejandro and I kept trying to make it more complicated.

7. The biggest doubt was how the hoops were going to adjust, and after asking this we all came up with multiple hoops.

8. Alejandro was the devil's advocate and made us realize a bunch of things hat would be wrong with our project.

9. I learned that  I am a good problem solver, I learned that the best way that teamwork works is by listening to other ideas and criticizing effectively, and that the design process is a good way to find flaws in products.

Design Day 3

CHOOSE

We should change the target audience and include girls since we saw that they would also be willing to play. Also, a younger audience would like the game.
The prototype had various strong points that we want to keep. Addiction, difficulty and simplicity. It doesn't need instructions for people to know what to do.
I believe that it is perfect the way it is so I wouldn't change anything.

IMPLEMENT

I will do the the Board, Daniel will do the Catapult and Sammy will do the ball.
I will bring hoops.

Design Project Day 2

This was my drawing.

Alejandro:
+Shows perspective. Creative title
-Wheels are difficult to create.

Daniel:
+Shows different points of view.
-Doesn't show how the basket is going to work.

Sammy:
+Has a lever that shows the catapult's lever
-The basket's height can't be modified.

We will use Daniel's catapult design and my hoop design.

FEEDBACK

+The design was interesting and very challenging. The catapult was creative and the scoring system innovating.
-The audience should be both girls and boys because girls want to play too.

Design Project Day 1

Partners: Daniel Moreno, Sammy Fajardo

Define
The game will be for Middle- High School boys.
Medium difficulty.
Topics of success: Soccer, Explosions, War, Marksmanship, Money,

Research
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRq955hPWxM
+This game was very creative and seemed fun. The design was nice, even though it looked weak.
-The design looked weak, and I don't understand how they did it.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=fvwp&NR=1&v=ttkgnVYvKus
+It was well done and the ball went in the box almost every time.
-The camerawork was horrendous and it wasn't very creative.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8P03PeFuywg
+It showed different machines and how to use them. They were made out of cardboar.
-The games were extremely easy

Ideation

Brainstorm Ideas.
1) A catapult/ basketball game.
2) A pinball game
3) Fusball

We chose the Catapult Game
What would make it good would be the option to choose how close the catapult is from the basket and how high the basket is. Maybe soldiers?
What would go wrong would be the basket and the weak structure. Also, making the catapult might be challenging.
