GAFE

Google Search

It is the world's most used internet tool. People Google search things whenever they feel it is necessary because they know that Google will find an answer. In the top 50 most popular websites, Google.com is the second most visited, google.co.in is 12, google.com.hk is 24, google.de is 25, google.co.uk is 27,  google.co.jp is 31, Google.fr is 34, google.br is 38, google.ru is 42, google.it is 49 and google.es is 50.
http://mostpopularwebsites.net/

Google search works with labels and most visited websites. If you search Futbol Club Barcelona, for example, you will be directed to a page which shows the most visited websites with the labels "Futbol", "Club" and "Barcelona". Since it is a popular subject, the club's official page will appear in the top, alongside some photos from Google images in the left.

Google search has a few shortcuts that may be helpful when you are researching information. For example, there is a translation button in which you can translate full pages into your native language. Also you can preview the link before actually entering it, which is also cool.

Google search can be used as anything and everything. Google offers hidden services that can save you a lot of time if you know how to use them correctly. Here are a few examples of these tips and tricks.

1. Finding the time at any place in the world. Just search Time in *insert place here*.
2. Searching for synonyms. For example, if you put YouTube video ~tutorial (with the ~ in front of tutorial) Google will also search for YouTube video guide, manual, reference. etc.
3. Find the definition of any word. You put define *word* and the first thing that appears will be the definition.Ms. Shawn, if you are reading this far, leave a comment on this post.
4. In Google Chrome the link bar may be used as a search bar. This helps when you are too lazy to enter Google.com to find what you're looking for.
5. You can do mathematical problems in Google search. You can even graph things such as y=10x-5
6. Convert units. Search 10 kg in pounds, etc.
7. You can search images by dragging them into the search box.

This is already widely used by the educational society and will be used throughout Google's age of glory.

Google Day 2.3

Harvard University is one of the best in the most explored fields of education. Today I will research

Best Medical Schools and Harvard's Ranking

Best Law Schools and Harvard's Ranking
Best Economic Schools and Harvard's Ranking

MEDICINE:
Top Universities

According to this page, Harvard is at the top with a stunning 97.9% effectivity. This ranking is based upon Academic reputation, Employer reputation and Citations per paper. The next university, Oxford, holds a 94% effectivity rate.

LAW
Top Universities

Again, Harvard is first with the same 97.9%  effectivity. The same filters apply. However, Yale University is at second place with 93.7%.

Also, US News says that Harvard is second while Yale is first. Maybe they don't use the same filters.

ECONOMY
Top Universities

This time Harvard was outhroned by MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and holds the second place, with the same criteria, with a 92.4% effectivity. MIT stands at first with 96.6% effectivity.

After all this research we can see that Harvard is hands down the best university in the world, based on its sports (even though Stanford is better) and academic achievements.

Google Day 2.1

My goals for today are
1. Find out the top ten colleges and universities in the world and why.
2. The top ten chosen careers and why.
3. Highest SAT scores in 2012.

US News

Top 10 in 2010
Harvard
Princeton
Yale
Columbia
Chicago
MIT
Stanford
Duke
U Penn
Cal Tech

The rankings are based on the tuition fees, acceptance rate, freshmen retention rate and 6 year graduation rate. The top ten universities charge around 40K dollars approximately. Non of the top ten are extremely cheap.

ALEC

The top ten careers that will grow in size in 2012 are:
Network Systems Analysts:
Medical Assistants
Medical Records and Health Information Technicians
Software Engineers
Fitness Trainers
Physical Therapist Aides
Veterinary Technicians
Dental Hygienists

LA Times

The top ten schools with highest SAT scores are

Gretchen Whitney High (2000)
Pacific Collegiate Charter (1961)
Mission San Jose High (1958)
Palo Alto High (1951)
Lynbrook High (1949)
Henry M. Gunn High (1943)
Monta Vista High (1931)
Saratoga High (1923)
Troy High (1917)
Oxford Academy (1913)

What I learned

I learned that a great education in the United States is not cheap, in fact, many people cannot afford to pay around 40 grand a year for their children's education. However, the success rate of these universities is so high that I think that the 20 thousand students that enter these universities a year will end up in the high levels of the economic ladder.
Also, the fact that it is so expensive makes your choice of career vital, since you dont have that much margin of error. However, in the present day many universities are having programs for people to choose their preffered career instead of regretting their decisions.

Google Day 4

Today, I spent most of the class outside because of a mass. However, I managed to use my time to create a sketch of a house in SketchUp. This house was pretty ugly, so Im not proud of it in any way. Below is a picture of the house.

Google Day 3

Today was a relaxed day. My goals were to have fun with SketchUp and do a model house. I used tutorials in youtube such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX0b1lmgjDE.

I learned to use many different tools in SketchUp such as the follow me tool and the push pull tool. They are extremely helpful when making structures and houses.
Below is the house that I made today.

Google Day #2

My Goals For Today

  1. Learn the skyscraper technology and what they do to support themselves.
  2. Understand earthquake proof technology  in order to design my building in a secure way.
  3. Download SketchUp 8 and make a prototype building.
Skyscrapers.

One important thing in skyscrapers is elevators. It is extremely inconvenient to move up and down a building with stairs. Now a days, the elevator shaft is usually in the center of the building, which is used to give support. That is the other important thing about skyscrapers. they require a great central structure that will allow them to be stable.
A great problem that architects face is the elevator-floor relationship. If you put a lot of floors and little elevators, people will be waiting in the lobby for a long time. However, if you put a lot of elevators, floor space will be lost. That is why the balance of elevators to floor space is important.

Earthquake Proof Technology.

Basically, the most important thing in earthquake proof technology is a strong base, escape routes and a moving area. The strong base will be used to support the whole building. It is usually the elevator shaft. The escape routes are in able to make a quick escape to an open space for safety. The moving space is usually the sidewalk surrounding the building. It allows the building to move without damaging others. In Japan, earthquake proof technology is really advanced, since they have frequent earthquakes.

this link taught me about main structure and why it is important.
This link taught me about escape routes and their history.

Google Sketchup Prototype Building

For next class, I will like to learn how to make tall and complex structures in SketchUp

Google Day 1

3 goals

Learn the basics of SketchUp.
http://www.sketchup.com/intl/es/training/videos/new_to_gsu.html

This link is extremely helpful for SketchUp users. It has tutorials in all the levels of difficulty. It starts up explaining how to make basic structures, and then continues on making more elaborate shapes and buildings.

Design a basic building in SketchUp.
Since I couldn't download SketchUp in the computer, I decided to use Minecraft today to make a basic structure.

Research "green" buildings.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green_building
Here I learned that a self sustainable building must have various things:

Water Efficiency: Having clean water can be a key factor in sustainable buildings. Collecting rain water and using low amounts of water in toilets and showers are all signs of a water efficient building.
Material Efficiency: Usually, material efficient buildings are made of low consuming materials. Some examples are lumber from third party forests (that are especially made to be cut down).
Energy Efficiency:  Sustainable energy such as solar, hydro and wind is used  as energy sources for the building. I am planning to do a building that will be able to create enough energy for itself and its neighboring structures.

Next class, I want to use SketchUp and start to design my building.

Google 20%

I am really interested in architecture. Many people from my family are architects, and I find the different types of architecture cool. Also, I would like to know how to use architecture programs that would symulate every single feature of a building. That is how I will mix technology and architecture.I will design a building.

Since I am very eco friendly, I am willing to design a 100% sustainable building that would generate more clean energy than it consumes. It might use many different types of energy and be earthquake proof. At the beginning I will use Google Sketch Up. Afterwards, I will try to use more advanced programs.

To demonstrate my knowledge, I am planning to make a video with my friend Mateo that will show all the features of the building.
